Meet David
A Life of Service. A Journey of Reflection.
I never set out to become a poet.
For much of my life, my focus was on serving others—first as a United States Marine Corps infantryman, then as an aviation professional dedicated to helping aspiring pilots achieve their dreams. Throughout every season of life, my greatest purpose has remained the same: to serve my family, my community, and those entrusted to my care.
Like many people, I learned to carry life's burdens quietly. I believed strength meant pressing forward, solving problems, and always putting others first. It wasn't until later that I discovered some of life's greatest battles aren't visible to the people around us.
Writing became the place where I finally slowed down.
What began as private thoughts soon became poems—honest reflections about service, family, identity, loss, resilience, healing, and hope. I didn't write because I considered myself a poet. I wrote because I needed to understand my own story.
Along the way, I realized something remarkable.
The more honestly I wrote about my own experiences, the more readers began telling me they saw pieces of themselves within the words.
That has become the heart of David Thompson Poetry.
My hope is never simply that someone enjoys a poem. My hope is that they pause, reflect, remember, and perhaps discover that they are not as alone as they once believed.
Today, I continue my work in aviation while pursuing a lifelong passion for writing. I remain deeply grateful for my wife of more than three decades, our five children, and the many people who have encouraged me to share these words with others.
Thank you for being here.
I hope you find something within these pages that speaks to your own journey.
Meet Sophie
More Than a Service Dog
Every journey is made easier when you don't have to walk it alone.
Sophie entered my life through Top Dogg K9 Foundation, an organization dedicated to rescuing dogs and pairing veterans with highly trained service dogs whose partnership transforms lives. What began as a match between a veteran and a dog quickly became something much deeper.
Sophie is my trusted teammate.
She accompanies me through airports, bookstores, speaking events, quiet afternoons of writing, and the ordinary moments of everyday life. Her calm presence provides reassurance during difficult days, grounding during stressful moments, and a constant reminder that healing often arrives in unexpected ways.
She has also become an important part of David Thompson Poetry.
If you've seen photographs throughout this website or read Where Is the Evidence?, you've already met her. She is woven into many of the stories that inspired these pages because she has been part of the journey behind them.
Beyond her work beside me, Sophie represents something much larger.
She represents the extraordinary impact that organizations like Top Dogg K9 Foundation have on veterans and their families. Their mission continues to change lives through the partnership of expertly trained service dogs and those they serve.
Supporting that mission has become one of the ways I hope to give back.
When you see Sophie at an event, she's probably working—even if she looks perfectly relaxed. Her vest isn't simply part of her attire; it's a reminder of the purpose she carries every day with quiet confidence and unwavering devotion.
She has taught me many lessons.
Perhaps the greatest is this:
Sometimes the strongest kind of support doesn't come through words at all.
Our Mission
Finding words for thoughts we often carry in silence.
David Thompson Poetry was created to give voice to the thoughts and emotions we often carry in silence.
Whether through poetry, conversation, or simply sharing life's experiences, my desire is to encourage reflection, inspire hope, and remind others that even life's most difficult seasons do not have to be faced alone.
That same spirit extends beyond these pages.
Together, Sophie and I are proud to support the incredible work of Top Dogg K9 Foundation and their mission of providing highly trained service dogs to veterans whose lives are forever changed through their partnership.
Thank you for visiting.
Thank you for reading.
And thank you for becoming part of this journey.
